Bulgaria — Mexico
An actress by ambition, a political scientist by conviction and a model by profession — a woman who spent a decade in front of the camera before finding the work that asks nothing at all of her face.
Born on the Bulgarian coast and educated in Sofia, Petya Stoyanov reads and works in five languages and carries, from ten years in international fashion, a body of relationships that runs from the Balkans to the Americas. Since January 2024 she has given that reach — quietly, and without announcement — to two foundations and a church community in Quintana Roo, in service of children, of the mothers who are imprisoned alongside them, and of women deprived of their liberty.
She is not a patron who signs and withdraws. She goes in person, she goes in Spanish, and she goes back.
The work
A woman photographed for a living has kept almost no record of the work that matters most to her — an omission of the well-meaning kind. What follows is not her account of it, but what the foundations themselves are willing to put in writing.

Biography
Six chapters. Read separately, they look like a woman who changed her mind repeatedly — a stage abandoned, a degree taken late, a career built on being looked at. Read in order, they describe a single unbroken instinct arriving, by an indirect route, at the thing it was always for.

Burgas, Bulgaria
Long before the runways, the campaigns and the cameras, there was a code. Burgas gave Petya Stoyanov a set of values she has never once renegotiated: that a person is measured by what they hand to somebody else, and by very little otherwise. Everything she has become since has been built on top of that, and nothing has been permitted to displace it.

Sofia · the theatre
Sofia found her early. She moved to the capital for the theatre, and she moved there to become an actress. It was the ambition she had held longest and the one she was least willing to discuss with people who found it unserious. She trained, she performed, and for several years she expected the stage to be the whole of her working life.
The theatre gave her two things she has never since been without: discipline, and the habit of listening properly. The second has proved the more useful of the two.

Political science · 2018
She did not leave the stage for a better offer. She left it because she had been watching the political situation in Bulgaria with a disappointment she could not put down — the sense of a country whose institutions were failing the ordinary people she had grown up among, and of a public life that had stopped answering to them.
An acting career, she came to feel, would let her portray that and change none of it. So she chose to study the thing that had disappointed her, on the reasoning that disillusionment is worth something only when it is converted into understanding. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from New Bulgarian University, awarded in 2018, with a specialisation in International Relations — a discipline that taught her how institutions actually move, and how rarely they move on their own.

A decade in fashion
For more than ten years she was among the most recognised faces in Bulgaria and across the Balkans — runway, editorial and campaign work, sought by brands, houses and international hotels, and familiar far beyond the region. The stage had wanted her to be looked at; so, it turned out, did this.
What that decade left her is not the photographs. It is the address book: founders, houses, hoteliers, organisers and press across Europe, the Balkans and the Americas — relationships built slowly, kept carefully, and open to her still. At the time she did not know what they were for.

Mexico
She went to Mexico and, unexpectedly, came to love it — a country that takes a stranger in long before she has done anything to deserve it, and offers more warmth than it asks for in return. She has lived there since, and considers it home.
What surrounded her in those first years was a world of an altogether different temperature: affluent, immaculate and almost entirely counterfeit, arranged around appearances and priced accordingly. It is a world that rewards being decorative and quietly punishes being sincere, and for a time she was both. Her heart was broken inside it — plainly, privately, and in a manner she has never made public and does not intend to.
What remained once the glamour had been stripped away was God. Everything after this point proceeds from that.

Quintana Roo · from 2024
She began volunteering in January 2024 and has not stopped since. She lends her name to almost nothing and her hours to a great deal; the work is unglamorous and largely unphotographed, which is precisely why she trusts it. Everything the earlier chapters had given her — the languages, the composure in front of a room, the connections, and the understanding of how slowly institutions move — proved to have been preparation for this one.
Faith
She trusted Him with what was left, and He rebuilt the rest.
She came to God in Mexico with nothing to offer and nothing to bargain with — which is, she believes, the only way anyone arrives.
For most of her adult life she was looked at. Faith asked the opposite discipline of her: to stop being the subject of the frame and to look outward instead, at people given far less who asked for far less. She stopped praying to be rescued and began asking what she was meant to do with the rescue.
The change was neither gentle nor fast. It cost her a version of herself she had spent years building, and she would not undo the exchange. Trust came first; understanding arrived long afterwards and only in part. Her part is to show up, to be dependable, and to keep her hands open.
She belongs today to a Christian community in Mexico, and that faith is the whole foundation of the work — not a decoration on top of it, and not a justification after the fact. It is the reason she goes, the reason she returns, and the reason she never wanted her name attached to any of it.
Only God judges. What is asked of everyone else is far simpler: to extend a hand, to show compassion, and to carry hope into the places where others can see only the mistakes.

Five languages
Nothing has served the work more plainly than the ability to speak to somebody in the language they think in.
Beyond volunteering
Most foundations doing this work are short of reach, not of commitment. That is the gap she is useful in.
Ten years of work that rarely kept her in one country left her with founders, private clients, hoteliers, organisers and press across Europe, the Balkans, the Gulf and the Americas — relationships built in person and still open to her.
Identifying people with both the means and the inclination to give, and putting them in front of organisations they would otherwise never learn existed. A foundation in Quintana Roo has no route to a private donor in Monaco or Sofia. She does.
Galas, benefit dinners and drives — filling the room, hosting it, and making the introductions on the night. She has spent years on the guest side of these evenings and knows precisely how an ask lands.
